About Us

The Way Taekwondo began as a demonstration team that was part of a larger demonstration unit with Parkway Baptist Church, in late 1989. The school would be chartered as Parkway Baptist Taekwondo in January of 1990. Around the the mid aughts (2000-2009), the program moved to University Presbyterian Church, and adopted the name “The Way” as the new school name. “The Way” is a reference to the last part of Tae Kwon Do, which roughly translates “Way” and or “mind,” and is also a reference to the original name given to early Christians in the beginning of the movement of faith. The Way expanded to Crosslife Church and Eastpoint Fellowship, and existed as a tri-location school for a little over a year, until University Presbyterian Church and Eastpoint Fellowship were no longer able to support the space the program required.
Currently nestled in the “Christian Life Center” gymnasium of Crosslife Church, which has been in operation for over 5 years, we boast a large black belt roster, and a relatively high retention rate.

Legacy is important to us, as it was handed down by our association’s founder, Grandmaster Edward B. Sell. We encourage you to visit the “Hall of Senior Instructors” to see the legacy. Each instructor named after our school’s founding instructor are all direct students of our founding instructor, and each senior instructor answers directly to the president of the United State’s Chung Do Kwan Association.

The Way Taekwondo is charted and credentialed by the United States Chung Do Kwan Association, the most prestigious organization in America. The USCDKA was founded by the late Senior Grandmaster Edward B. Sell, the highest ranked non-Korean black belt in the world, and is now spearheaded by Grandmaster Brenda J. Sell, the highest ranked American female, and 2nd highest ranked female in the world of Taekwondo.
Through the USCDKA, we have access to phenomenal training seminars, local, state, regional, and national level tournaments, instructor courses, and special seminars hosted by certified black belt master instructors, including the highly decorated Grandmaster Brenda Sell.
It is also through this prestigious organization that we have access to international credentials through the World Chung Do Kwan Association, and the Kukkiwon.

About the USCDKA

“Name and reputation fade away, but credentials last a lifetime.” These are the words of Senior Grandmaster Edward B. Sell (deceased). He was the first person outside of Korea to ever test for 4th degree black belt master, and kept that title all the way to his 9th degree rank! The posthumous rank of 10th degree is only awarded to men and women of incredible skill, passion, and dedication to the martial arts. He is the only American registered with this posthumous honor. In truth, it is because of this great pioneer that Taekwondo in America is what it is today. Yet another first that he carries is to be the only non-Korean recognized in the Taekwondo park in Seoul, Korea, as a pioneer of the art and science of Taekwondo.

Grandmaster Brenda J. Sell, 9th degree black belt, our current association leader, carries her own firsts. She was the first woman to be certified as a referee. (first, even before the native Korean women training in Taekwondo!), as a female, she has led the way for women the world over in Taekwondo, smashing barriers along the way. Recently, she became only the 2nd female to ever achieve the rank of 9th degree black belt, and the first non-Korean to do so.

To say that our credentialing organization is top notch would be an understatement. You can find out more about our organization by visiting the official United States Chung Do Kwan Association website. We encourage you to check out the wikipedia articles about Grandmaster Edward B. Sell, and Grandmaster Brenda J. Sell.

What does this mean for you? This means that you can know that the training you receive is top notch, and approved by pioneers and leaders within the Taekwondo world. It means that your rank certificates are nationally recognized, and through the USCDKA, you also have access to world titles such as the World Chung Do Kwan Association and the Kukkiwon.

Our Programs

The Way Taekwondo currently meets in the Christian Life Center Gymnasium at Crosslife Church. We are a Christian Taekwondo University through the United States Chung Do Kwan Association. This does not mean you need to hold any particular religious belief to join. It simply means that we as leaders share the same vision, and believe our call is to share our passion with the world, through the eyes of the faith that we hold dear to. There are scripture verses and Bible Studies at the end of classes, however, belief in them are up to each individual, and we will always respect that!

Every rank from yellow belt all the way through 1st degree black belt has a Bible verse memorization requirement. Of course, all are welcome to train, regardless of your faith. Conversion to Christianity is not required at any point in our program.
